THE BIG NEWS

New Video! Meet Me and Painting Celia

A split image shows three people in portrait-style photos. On the left is Maya Bairey, a woman with glasses and shoulder-length dark hair, smiling warmly. In the center is a woman with medium skin, shoulder-length wavy hair, and a thoughtful expression, representing the character Celia. On the right is a man with medium skin and long dark hair, a trimmed beard, and a pensive look, representing the character León.
I made a video introducing myself and my novel, and it took more guts than I thought it would. It feels weird to speak into a camera and say "Hi, this is me."

Much cooler, though, is that it’s not just me. Celia and León are in it as well, brought to life with subtle movement and expression. Last year I used AI to create still images of them, and this time I used better AI to animate those portraits. Seeing them blink and breathe in this new video felt surreal. It was a small, strange kind of magic that touched me more than I thought it would.

You can watch the video right now on TikTok, Instagram, or my website.

Flawed and Worth Loving

A blue kintsugi bowl with gold repairs, showing that what’s flawed can still be worth cherishing
I’ve been writing stories since I was six. One was saved by my parents, and it’s as awkward and flawed as you’d expect from a first grader (but I’m still proud of the perfect spelling). That story, like many I wrote growing up, had a main character who messed up but was liked anyway. There’s no age limit on wanting reassurance that we can be loved even when we’re imperfect.

That same longing shows up in every character I write today...

WHAT'S MAYA BEEN UP TO?

an impressionist painting of a peaceful, clutter-free space with a vase and leaves in soft light against a textured wall

Taming Where We Live

Clearing clutter, and finding out why we were so attached to it, can bring serious peace. Devon Ervin’s Lovely Little Living Spaces challenge has been helping me reset.

Book Birthday!

My debut novel turned one this month! It’s been a wild, beautiful year. If you were one of my early readers, thank you! If you haven’t read it yet… well, you’ve got great timing. 🥳

The Duckling Story

You might remember me mentioning our nesting duck last month. Here's how her story turned out. Yes, there are fluffy yellow duckling pics!

DORY'S CORNER

Dory is fed several times a day but rarely finishes his wet food. He eats the part that pleases him, abandoning the rest with no concern for waste or witnesses. For years, I threw out the remains with a sigh.

But now, in the afternoons I set his leftovers out on the deck for the crows. They flutter down with a rush of wings, offer a few conversational caws, and eat just ten feet from where I sit.

Of course, this renews Dory's interest. Maybe that food was better than he thought! He pads out to eat the meal he snubbed hours earlier, while the crows wait politely nearby. It's nice that they respect each other. There’s no drama; just an old cat, clever crows, and a shared belief that someone will provide.

Towels In Daegu

By EJ Jordan

Darnell Harris heads to Daegu, South Korea to teach English and escape the expectations of his family, planning one year abroad before joining the family business. Instead he's drawn into Korea’s vibrant social scene and meets two very different women: mysterious Teagan and electrifying Shaina.

With romance, adventure, and a tempting job on the line, Darnell must choose between the life he came to escape and the one he’s only just beginning to imagine.

Of Shadows & Ash

By Julie Blackheart

Of Shadows and Ash kicks off a dark fantasy romance series full of slow-burn heat, cursed witches, morally grey fae, and a heroine with more power, and more past, than she realizes.

Felicity Forrest thought she was a nobody, until killing a fae man awakens forbidden magic, a snarky familiar, and a prophecy that says she’ll destroy everything. But Felicity has never been one to follow rules, and if she really is the harbinger of chaos, the courts are about to find out what happens when you corner a witch.

WILL YOU HELP ME?

If you have read (or listened!) to Painting Celia and not yet left a review, would you please write a quick one for me? Reviews are what lead other readers to the book. The most valuable places to leave one are Amazon and Goodreads.

I would be so grateful, my friends!
