About the author

Maya Bairey

Maya writes from a house floating in the Columbia River in Portland, Oregon, where she lives with her husband and their cat, Dory. Outside of her writing life, she feeds the neighborhood crows, paints, and protests with the Raging Grannies.

Her fiction and essays examine the quiet empowerment of women’s lives, queer identity, and the ways longing and resilience shape human experience. Her work has been published in Abstract Magazine, Bright Flash Literary Review, and Women Writers, Women(’s) Books, and she has spoken on KBOO 90.7 FM about writing, marketing, and the pursuit of creative independence.

By day, Maya works in corporate journalism and digital marketing. She dedicates her creative focus to spicy contemporary romance and community publishing through her imprint, Lingua Ink Media. She leads a twice-weekly Writing Cohort, helping fellow writers maintain momentum and advance their projects, and publishes underrepresented voices through Lingua Ink.

Maya’s work is driven by a fascination with people at turning points — characters and creators alike — seeking clarity, connection, and the courage to move forward.

Quotes

What people are saying

"Maya is passionate about creating stories that feel relatable and real. Her characters are imperfect, yet find solutions within themselves and through their relationships, both romantic and platonic. This makes her writing a breath of fresh air in a world where many romance novels often feature idealized and one-dimensional characters."

"Maya's writing is personal and powerful, and her characters are real and relatable, making them all the more endearing. If you're looking for a good read, be sure to check out Painting Celia."

"The way that Celia struggles to find her voice is something that I think a lot of women can relate to. And I think that the way that the book deals with the themes of mental health and self-expression is incredibly important and timely."
