spoilersKelsey doesn’t just light up rooms with her glowing personality. She also draws insightful conclusions and bluntly illuminates them for everyone else.

“He needed deflating, honey,” Kelsey said as she gently sat, close to Celia. “When they’re so cocky they start making jokes, you have to get loud.”

Kelsey’s natural charm and confident personality shine, making her a vibrant presence. She’s also known for her spot-on observations, as she watches others and draws insightful conclusions. Despite her straightforward mouth, Kelsey is caring and fun-loving, making her a great friend.

Fluttering and avid for gossip, always in motion and full of energy, Kelsey is known for her yellow heels and affinity for ginger ale. As a former “street team kid,” Kelsey was paid to “dress cool” and go into bars to promote various brands. She loved the buzz and fashion parts of the job, but had to move on as she approached 30 and her perceived coolness waned. She now works in a high-end store selling clothes she can’t afford, since it is at least fashion-related. Her love for promotion has not waned, and she takes great pride in seeing a customer come in looking for an outfit she helped promote on social media.

Kelsey’s bluntness is one of her most endearing qualities. She doesn’t point out people’s flaws or observations maliciously, but if someone asks her for her honest opinion, she’ll always give them a spot-on answer. Kelsey’s bluntness is a reflection of her confidence and strong boundaries. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Kelsey and Celia have known each other for ten years, but their relationship only grows when Celia begins to open up and express her feelings. Kelsey, who never pressed her friend further than she was willing to share, becomes the first person Celia really turns to. Kelsey is quick to advocate for Celia, encouraging her and pumping her up when León acts obnoxiously. Kelsey is horrified to learn of the abuse Celia suffered as a child and is quick to validate her friend’s strength. Her easy honesty and supportive nature make her the perfect person for Celia to practice expressing feelings to.

The others in the group find Kelsey’s sunny enthusiasm just plain fun. Andrew and Kelsey recognize in each other the ability to enjoy life. Although they never went on a date, they have a comfortable friendship. Trevor and Kelsey often bond over photography, and she often poses for his personal art shoots. Trevor has been mentoring Kelsey as she styles and photographs mannequins at La Creche and submits them to the social media team. Kelsey is less interested in the art side of photography and prefers the joy of buzz. Even León learns to turn to Kelsey for advice in the end. Kelsey’s eagle-eyed honesty makes her a great sounding board.

Understanding the importance of strong female relationships, Kelsey is a surprisingly maternal figure to her friends. Her own mother was kind and supportive, setting a great example. Once it’s revealed that Kelsey is pregnant, we learn how excited she’s been about the baby, determined to be the best mother she can. Kelsey’s pregnancy lends a little vulnerability to her confident character, as she’s facing a lot of change. Despite the unknown future, Kelsey is confidently looking forward to the adventure.

Bonus Details
  • Men hit on her a lot, but Kelsey’s been dating Charlie (off and on) for a few years. He is the father of her child and they will co-parent, but both agree they’re not up for getting together permanently.
  • Kelsey used to be teased by her friends for always having a glass of white wine in her hand. She drank it because it is relatively low calorie, and she did more carrying than sipping. Kelsey starts asking for ginger ale before the story opens, thinking her friends will notice, and is surprised when no one does. She would have noticed if one of her friends changed a habit!
  • When the group meets at the gin bar, Kelsey is late because she’s been telling Charlie she’s pregnant. He did not react well and she is angry with him. She deflects the conversation when asked about him later at the bar.
  • Celia buys a lot of clothes at La Creche just so her friend can get the commission. Most just hang in her closet. Kelsey never suspects because if she were wealthy, she would buy even more!
  • Kelsey’s decison to name her baby Ruth is because she’s a fan of late actress Ruth Gordon. She loved her portayals of exhuberant, supposedly-flighty women who secretly knew exactly what was up.
